When I was little there was this Islamic song from a kid’s movie that was like, “Everyone’s a Muslim.” and then there was a part where they’d show all these different looking people and they’d be like “What do we have in common?? WE’RE ALL MUSLIM!”

So yeah, until I was like 9 I thought everyone was Muslim and there were no other religions and then this white girl moved next door and told me her mama said Jesus loved her and I was like, “Who’s Jesus?” And she told me the story and I’m like, “You mean Isa? He’s not god, Allah is!”

And then she disagreed and my whole world shattered.

Let's just all make sweeping generalizations about people.

You know, I used to get so sad when I had someone tell me that because of my sexuality I was not considered a member of the Islamic community. I used to allow myself to fall into depression and even consider leaving religion all together because of their opinions, the evil that came from their tongues and the constant fighting but then one day I woke up and after I had finished making fajr a question crossed my mind - “Why are you upsetting yourself over someone else’s view of you and your relationship with God? Why does their opinion matter any more than yours does?” After thinking about it for a while I came to the realization that their opinions weren’t important to me. What was important to me was right there in that moment, myself and Allah speaking to one another on my prayer rug. I had bowed down to the one that created me and had told Him that He was the Most Merciful, I had called Him　 Al- Ghaffar, the forgiving. Imam Ghazali wrote “The sins (of man) are among the disgraceful things which He veils by placing a veil upon them in this world and disregarding their punishment in the hereafter…Certainly Al-Ghaffar denotes an extreme…of forgiveness in respect of forgiveness that is repeated time after time.” I don’t need anyone else to tell me who I am or how I will be treated in the akhira by Allah because I know that His mercy outshines His wrath and His forgiveness is never ending, I know that I am not perfect but I strive to be better than I am and I know that no matter who I am attracted to or fall in love with, my true love is Allah and because of the love I have for Him which pales in comparison to the love He has for us, I will continue to bow down to Him and not the opinions and gossip of His creatures.

Blah.

If anyone can run people away from Islam, it is Muslims. Some of the Muslims I know in real life and on this site provide such a skewed view of the religion. They are so harsh and constantly cursing other Muslims and people in general. They hate for someone to disagree with them and shun that person to no end. It’s such a ridiculous thing to see and not only does it piss me off, it saddens me.

“It was by the mercy of Allah that you were gentle with them (O, Mohammad) for if you had been harsh and hard of heart they would of dispersed from around you. So pardon them and pray forgiveness for them and consult with them in the affair” (Quran 3:159).

Through gentleness, honesty and compassion Prophet Muhammad changed the lives and hearts of some of the most stubborn people, but you expect to call people to Islam or speak about Islam while uttering curses and harsh attacks against fellow Muslims?
